Bariatric surgeon Dr Shashank S Shah has been honoured with the American Diabetes Association Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award 2016 for his contribution in the field of gastric bypass surgery for diabetes.

Dr Shah was conferred with the coveted award, given in recognition of Diabetes research, at a function in New Orleans yesterday, a release issued by American Diabetes Association said.

The Pune-based surgeon received the award for his abstract Gastric Bypass Vs Medical/Lifestyle Care for Type 2 Diabetes in South Asians, which was the focus of his Vivian Fonseca Award Lecture, it said.

Desmond Schatz, president, Medicine & Science American Diabetes Association, congratulated Shah for his dedication and innovation in the field of gastric bypass surgery for diabetes.

Dr Shah, who has authored numerous publications on surgery for diabetes, in particular gastric bypass surgery, is Director of a Laparo-Obeso Centre in Pune, at present.

The centre specialises in comprehensive treatment for obesity and related metabolic diseases, and also offers training for laparoscopic and bariatric surgery.

The ADA's meeting the world's largest such conference will provide participants access to more than 2,500 original research presentations, interactions with leading diabetes experts and other join academic sessions.

Since 1940, the ADA is leading the fight to stop diabetes, its victims and its consequences through research, managing and curing the lifestyle disease, community services, awareness programmes and prevention.

Shah is the first and only Indian to head three major international societies on diabetes as president of AIAARO (All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity) and as immediate past president of Obesity Surgery Society Of India (OSSI), IEF (International Excellence Federation, India Chapter).

Besides holding a world record for conducting 45 hernia surgeries in 10 hours, the National Geographic channel has aired a documentary on his work to prevent juvenile and adolescent diabetes in India.
