Hiatal Hernia Treatment in Pune in Pune & Mumbai

What is a Hiatal Hernia?

A hiatal hernia happens when some of the stomach bulges through the diaphragm and into the chest area. The diaphragm is a muscle separating the chest from the abdomen. It has an opening (hiatus) just big enough for the esophagus to go through. When this opening widens or becomes weak, it allows some of the stomach to push upward and create a hiatal hernia.

Recognizing the Symptoms of a Hiatal Hernia

Most individuals with a hiatal hernia have symptoms that are very much like acid reflux, such as heartburn, chest pain, dysphagia, and food or acid regurgitation. Some individuals may also experience bloating, frequent belching, or the feeling of food being stuck in the throat. Large hiatal hernias may result in shortness of breath and, on occasion, can result in life-threatening complications like strangulation.

What Causes a Hiatal Hernia?

Hiatal hernias tend to occur as a result of heightened pressure within the abdominal cavity, which compromises the diaphragm over time. Obesity, persistent coughing, frequent vomiting, heavy lifting, and straining during defecation are all contributing factors. Aging and genetic factors also have a role, making older individuals more prone to this condition.

Available Treatment Options

For mild cases, medications and dietary changes can also control symptoms. Steer clear of large meals, limit foods that are too acidic and too spicy, aim for a normal weight, and sleep with the head elevated. For severe complications or severe cases, surgery becomes an option. Laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair involves a minimally invasive operation of repositioning the stomach and tightening the hole in the diaphragm so that relief may be achieved permanently.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Hiatal Hernia

If not treated, a hiatal hernia may result in chronic acid reflux, esophagitis, ulcers, and, although rare, strangulation of the stomach tissue. Early medical evaluation prevents complications and enhances overall gastrointestinal health.
