What Is Mucocele of the Gallbladder?
Gallbladder mucocele occurs when mucus builds up within the gallbladder as a result of obstruction of the cystic duct. This results in a distended, enlarged gallbladder full of thickened mucus but not bile. Though it is not an infective condition, if not addressed, it develops into complications such as infection, rupture of the gallbladder, or inflammation.
Symptoms and Warning Signs
Most patients with a gallbladder mucocele do not have symptoms early in the course of the disease. As the disease progresses, symptoms of dull or sharp upper right abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and discomfort following the ingestion of fatty meals develop. In more advanced cases, if infection becomes established, fever and jaundice may also develop.
Causes and Risk Factors
Mucocele most often arises because of an obstruction in the cystic duct that does not allow bile to empty from the gallbladder. Gallstones are the most frequent cause of the obstruction, but it may also be caused by scarring, inflammation, or bile duct anomaly. Individuals with a history of gallbladder disease, obesity, and extended fasting are more likely to have it.
